Can Canvas Detect?

Can Canvas detect screen sharing?

No — and the reason is structural. A standard quiz is a web page, and web pages can't see your screen, your other apps, or a call you're on. Here's where that holds and the one place it doesn't.

NoThe short answer

Can Canvas detect screen sharing?

No. Standard Canvas can't detect screen sharing, screen recording, or a second device showing your screen. It runs in a browser tab with no access to your screen or other apps. Only a proctoring add-on like Proctorio or Respondus Monitor changes that.

Why a web page can't see your screen

A Canvas quiz lives inside a browser tab, and browsers wall pages off from the rest of your computer. Without an explicit screen-share permission prompt — the kind you approve on a video call — a page has no way to read your display, your other windows, or a second monitor. Sharing your screen to a friend or another device happens entirely outside that wall.

The exception, and the catch

Proctoring tools are the exception: they ask for screen-recording permission up front and can flag a second display, so you'll know when one is in play. And even without them, remember the catch that applies everywhere — if helping yourself means leaving the quiz tab, that focus loss is still logged. Staying on the page is what CheatGPT is for.

Frequently asked questions

Can Canvas detect screen sharing?
No. Standard Canvas runs in a browser tab and has no access to your screen, so it can't tell if you're sharing, casting, or recording it. That only changes with a proctoring add-on like Proctorio or Respondus Monitor.
Can Canvas tell if I'm on a Zoom call sharing my screen?
No. Canvas can't see other applications, including a video call. It has no awareness that Zoom — or any screen share — is running.
Can Canvas detect a second monitor?
Not standard Canvas. A second display is invisible to a normal quiz. Some proctoring tools attempt to detect multiple monitors, but that's a separate, enabled-on-purpose system.
Does screen sharing still leave any trace?
Not the sharing itself. But if sharing makes you leave the quiz tab, that focus loss is logged like any tab switch. Staying on the quiz page is what keeps the log clean.
